New Home for Vulnerable Children Opens with U.S.-Polish Cooperation

Stephen M. Haykin, Mission Director for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Georgia, will join First Lady of Georgia Sandra Roelofs, First Lady of Poland Anna Komorowska, and Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs Andria Urushadze to open a small group home for ten children in Gldani, Tbilisi. The home will provide safe, home-like conditions for the children, and will be the setting for planned care leading to possible reunification with families or other permanent living solutions.

On July 27th, U.S. Ambassador John R. Bass joined First Deputy Minister of Education Akaki Seperteladze to celebrate the results of the U.S. Government’s Vocational Education Project (VEP) in Georgia. Administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the project has trained more than 5,000 participants in vocations in the construction and tourism sectors. Nearly 70 percent of project graduates found employment at private-sector companies.

U.S. Ambassador John R. Bass joined First Lady of Georgia Sandra Roelofs, local NGO HERA, and the Tbilisi Municipality on Saturday, July 2 for the 2011 Race for the Cure breast cancer awareness event at Turtle Lake. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among Georgian women between the ages of 14 to 49, with an incidence rate higher than the Eastern European average. Three or four women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Georgia. A HERA survey shows that Georgians have a low level of knowledge about breast cancer, methods of early detection, and treatment options.

On April 13 USAID marked the start of a partnership between TBC Bank and USAID’s Health System Strengthening Project (HSSP) and New Applied Technology Efficiency and Lighting Initiative (NATELI) to further increase health sector lending in Georgia. USAID Mission Director Jock Conly, Minister of Health Andrew Urushadze, and TBC Bank President Vakhtang Butskhrikidze welcomed health sector borrowers interested in using USAID-backed TBC loans for the construction, renovation and equipping of hospitals to a presentation held at TBC Bank Headquarters.
